CarolinaEast Medical Center in New Bern, North Carolina, has made two network changes with Medicare Advantage insurers this year.
What’s Actually Changing
CarolinaEast Medical Center is ending in-network status with UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans effective December 31, 2026. This follows an earlier change with Blue Cross Blue Shield of North Carolina Medicare Advantage plans, effective July 1, 2026.
Both changes apply specifically to CarolinaEast Medical Center. CarolinaEast Physicians, the affiliated medical group, remains in-network with both plans, and Original Medicare coverage is unaffected.
Why This Is Happening
CarolinaEast has cited payment policies, claims handling, and reimbursement terms as reasons for these contract changes – a common theme in hospital-insurer negotiations nationally right now.
Why This Matters for You
If you’re on a UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plan and use CarolinaEast Medical Center for hospital care, this change takes effect January 1, 2027, specifically for hospital-based services. Your routine visits with CarolinaEast physicians are not affected by either change.
What You Can Do
- Understand what’s actually affected. This is specifically about hospital-level care at CarolinaEast Medical Center – not your physician relationships.
- Use AEP (October 15 – December 7) to review your options. This is a normal opportunity to compare plans that keep CarolinaEast in-network for hospital care, or to look at Original Medicare with a Medigap policy.
- Ask what hospital you’d be referred to instead, if you’d like to understand what care would look like if you stay on your current plan.
- Read your Annual Notice of Change letter for details specific to your plan.
- If the July BCBS change already affected you, it’s worth checking whether your current plan has this UnitedHealthcare change ahead too.
