Plan Ahead for Long-Term Care
Home care, assisted living, and nursing care are expensive. The right plan protects your savings — and takes the pressure off your family.
Why Planning Ahead Matters
Most people don’t think about long-term care until they — or a parent — suddenly need it. By then, options are limited and expensive. Burke Insurance Group helps you look at this now, while you have more choices, and compares long-term care coverage options from the carriers we work with so you can make an informed decision at no cost to you.
What Long-Term Care Actually Costs
According to CareScout’s 2025 Cost of Care Survey, the national median annual cost is roughly $80,080 for in-home non-medical caregiving (44 hours/week), $74,400 for an assisted living facility, and $129,575 for a private room in a nursing home. Costs vary significantly by state and region — but in every state, they add up fast, and Medicare generally does not cover extended long-term custodial care.
Is This You?
- You want to protect retirement savings from being wiped out by a long-term care event
- You’re helping a parent think through care costs and coverage
- You’ve seen a family member go through this without a plan and don’t want the same for your own family
- You’re already working with us on Medicare or retirement income and want your full picture covered
- You want to understand your options today — hybrid life/LTC policies, traditional LTC insurance, or short-term care coverage — before you need to decide under pressure
Coverage Options We Help You Compare
Traditional Long-Term Care Insurance
Pays a daily or monthly benefit toward qualifying care — in-home care, assisted living, or a nursing facility — for a defined benefit period. Premiums and underwriting depend heavily on age and health, so earlier is generally more affordable.
Hybrid Life/Long-Term Care Policies
Combines life insurance with a long-term care benefit. If you need care, you can use the funds for care costs; if you don’t, your beneficiaries typically still receive a death benefit. A popular option for people who don’t want to “use it or lose it.”
Annuity-Based Long-Term Care Rider
Adds an LTC benefit to an annuity, which can double or triple your monthly payout if you need qualifying care — using money you’ve already set aside. Underwriting is typically more lenient than life insurance or traditional LTC coverage, often just confirming you’re not currently receiving care. A practical fit if health issues have limited your other options, or if you’re repositioning an existing annuity, IRA, or CD.

Long-Term Care FAQ
Generally, no. Medicare covers short-term skilled nursing or rehab care after a qualifying hospital stay, but it does not cover ongoing custodial care — help with daily activities like bathing, dressing, or eating — which is what most long-term care insurance is designed to cover.
Earlier is almost always better, because pricing and eligibility are tied to age and health. Many people start looking at coverage in their 50s or early 60s, while they’re more likely to qualify and premiums are lower.
Traditional long-term care insurance is “use it or lose it” — if you never need care, you don’t get the premiums back. Hybrid policies combine life insurance with a long-term care benefit, so your family typically receives a death benefit even if you never use the care benefit.
It depends on the condition and the policy type. Some hybrid products have more flexible underwriting than traditional long-term care insurance. The only way to know your options is to go through underwriting for your specific situation.
